Copyright Free Video Editing
I created this concept project to help video editors avoid copyright claims & strikes on YouTube and achieve financial success.
Overview
Given that the project was made via the SAM Model, I wanted the text-based storyboard to be clear, brief, and precise.
I designed the module to only include content that was absolutely necessary.
The content is first delivered through the “lead editor” Leon, and then the user applies their newly acquired skills by completing an engaging drag and drop activity.
Audience: YouTube Video Creators and Editors
Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Storyboarding, Visual Design, Prototyping
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe Illustrator, Google Suite
Process
This project was created through the SAM Model. The iterative prototyping nature of SAM blended well with the objective of the mini-module and the fast-paced nature of YouTube in general. The final product was primarily based on the second prototype I developed, combined with elements from the first and third prototype.

Color Palette
The visual direction of the project was centered around the color palette below. In order to balance the weighty content concerning copyright data, I selected colors that radiate a peaceful and laid-back complexion. The color-way’s purpose is to express the idea that although copyright statistics can seem frightening, they can easily be navigated around when approached in a calm manner.
Development
I had a blast developing this project. The module was developed entirely in Articulate Storyline 360, including the visual mockups. Part of the appeal of a mini-module is that more time can be spent on testing out different visual design techniques and experiments as opposed to drafting a large amount of content. In other words, this project allowed me to highlight the essentials and cut the fluff. What’s more, I am extremely happy with the way the icons turned out for this project. I wanted the icons to be as simple as possible while still containing all of the visuals necessary to express copyright related concepts. I crafted the icons with care in Adobe Illustrator, and the results were rewarding. In addition, all of the elements were re-colored and modified for originality.
Results and Takeaways
All in all, this was such a fun project to create. While I purposefully planned for this eLearning experience to be small-scale in length, I hope to one day explore ways to incorporate even more deliberate content into the module. I would be mindful to only add content that further extends an editor’s or creator’s freedom, without including irrelevant details. Yet, I still strongly believe the project perfectly meets its objectives in its respective size. In conclusion, this project helped me grow as an instructional designer, and I hope the material will help all kinds of editors and creators.
